What does “elalem” mean?
Elalem is Turkish for “other people” or “everyone else”: the neighbors, the relatives, the whole world watching. It combines Turkish el (stranger, others) and Arabic âlem (the world, people).
In Turkish culture, “Elalem ne der?”, meaning “What will people say?”, is the familiar worry behind countless decisions, from what to wear to whom to marry. Many cultures know it: in Hindi and Urdu it's “log kya kahenge?”
